OLD BUSINESS

·     Minutes from October Meeting – Minutes were accepted with correction: Karen Copper was not the former Chairperson for the Young Members committee. This could not be done at November’s meeting due to the lack of a quorum.

·     Notes from November Meeting - The November 5 meeting was unofficial due to the lack of a quorum. Topic discussed around the table included: 1) the need for programs, 2) pre-college outreach activity, 3) status of next newsletter, 4) current activity for Young Professional Award, and 5) preparations for the upcoming annual Pilot Education day. The Secretary will distribute details separately.

·        Treasurer’s Report – Karen Copper

Account Balances Report shows $5914.25 in checking and $3439.69 in savings. These balances reflect the Category I and II AIAA National rebates we have received.

·        Region V Representative – Larry Brase

There was no Region V telecon to report. The next meeting of the Region V representatives will be at the Aerospace Sciences meeting in January.

·        Committee Reports:

Arrangements – Walt Reschke

Plans are in place for our joint meeting with the SAE on January 15, 2002. The topic will be "Scenario Development." We need a flyer no later than December 17. Need to modify the SAE flyer to list our ticket sellers.

Attendance – Andrew Cary

Continuing to set up the payroll deduction for section meeting tickets.

Career Enhancement – Steve D’Urso

No activity to report. Steve's review of AIAA National's career enhancement program shows that it is focused on job-to-job, not on enhancement of a current job. He noted the existence of a new social organization for Boeing new hires, called REACH.

Education – Marty Ferman  No report. Marty is unable to make our Council meetings because of a regularly scheduled class he teaches at Park's College.

Historian – Fred Roos  No report

Honors and Awards – Ray Cosner

Ray is gathering information from last year's activity. This committee's activity is mainly in the spring.

Membership – Joe Stemler

We had over 3 dozen requests for the free 9 month trial memberships. All 14 of the section's trial membership applications were given out on first come, first served basis. We have picked up eight new members, and 1 membership was extended to the VP of Engineering Lockhard.  Joe is checking the status of the remaining five. Info and regular applications were sent to another 24 individuals. Council members suggested that Joe formulate a plan for a follow-up with those who have expressed interest in AIAA. Though funds for follow-up activity aren't currently in our budget, the section receives $7 from National for each new member. We should have an AIAA info packet assembled and available for issue to our new hires. We should also publicize the 1/2 price memberships.

We need to find a Chairperson for the Young Member's Committee who will get young members involved.

Joe has requested from AIAA National a 50-Year membership pin for William Briggs. He suggests we present the pin at one of our dinner meetings.

Newsletter – Dave Morgan

The next newsletter is in work. Washington University is sponsoring an ad in the newsletter.

Pilot Education – Jeff  Larrick

Security issues at Boeing have caused the venue for the 27th Annual safety seminar Cafeteria on 19 Jan 2002 to be moved to Parks College. The auditorium there is smaller, but nicer than the Building 33 cafeteria.

Pre-College Outreach - Karen Copper

The teacher's program at the Historic Aircraft Restoration Museum in Creve Coeur was cancelled. No teachers registered for the program.

Programs – Bill LaManna

Bill was not able to attend, but information was distributed about the program for the on the January 15 meeting with the SAE. Boeing and AIAA National have been contacted for speakers for future programs.

Public Policy – Dick Pinckert

Engineer's Week is in February. AIAA usually participates by giving presentations at schools etc. Dick is working up a plan for participating in the annual Congressional Visit Days in Washington D.C.

Publicity (Internal) - Bruce Scheidhauer  No report.

Service Projects – Gary White

Preparations are underway for our participation in the annual regional Science Fair.

A local chapter of the Future Engineers of America has been started. Would the section be interested in providing project support, materials etc.?

University City is looking for scientists and engineers to review its science curriculum.

Strategic Planning - Larry Brase

The committee held its first meeting on November 2. Information was reviewed. The Los Angeles section has had notable success in increasing their membership. The two main reasons for success: 1) they listened to what their current and prospective members wanted and 2) they followed the AIAA National manual. The committee agreed that a new survey is needed that would reach a wide range of groups, not just our members. Making the survey web-based may improve participation.

Tech. Specialist / Mini Symposium – No Chairperson  No Report

Webmaster – John Donigan

Our web site was temporarily lost due to a system crash. It is up again and has been updated.

Young Members - No Chairperson

Need new chairperson.

Young Professional Award – Ron Smith

Considering awarding the Young Professional Award at the January 15 meeting.

·        Technical Committee Nominations

At Boeing, nominations are being handled through the functional organizations. Boeing wants a more pro-active approach to TC memberships.

NEW BUSINESS

·        New Young Members Committee Chairperson

Ron Smith emphasized the need for a new chairperson for the Young Member's Committee. He volunteered to work on this. He also suggested including the Young Professional Award as part of the YM Committee.

·        Student Conference

Larry Brase noted the student conference will be in April at Parks College, St. Louis University. Help will be needed from the section for judges etc.

·       Next Meeting is 7 January 2002

Motion to adjourn was seconded and approved.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Dowgwillo

St. Louis Section Secretary
