4 March 2002

The meeting was called to order by Peggy Holly at 5:10 PM. However, a quorum was not present.

Attendees: Peggy Holly, Bob Dowgwillo, Karen Copper, Rudy Yurkovich, Walt Reschke, Andrew Cary, Steve D'Urso, Ray Cosner, Joe Stemler, Dave Morgan, John Donigan

OLD BUSINESS

·     Minutes from the February Meeting – Minutes were reviewed and minor corrections offered. The minutes could not be approved due to the lack of a quorum.

·        Treasurer’s Report – Karen Copper

Karen provided copies of our account balances and budget status. Expenses since last month are $100 for a deposit for the hall for Trivia Night, and $1300 for support of the student conference. The section's total balance as of 4 March is 7,774.10.

·        Region V Representative – Rudy Yurkovich for Larry Brase

The next telecon will be devoted to discussing planning and preparation for the student conference in April.

·        Committee Reports:

Arrangements – Walt Reschke

Dave Spong is no longer available for the March section meeting. Immediate alternates are also unavailable for the planned meeting date. Walt will cancel the meeting on the planned date and reschedule to accommodate Bob Krieger as speaker. The rescheduled meeting will be held in the Boeing Bldg 100 auditorium.

Representative Todd Aiken will be our featured speaker for the April section meeting. Topic at this time is unknown. Having the meeting at the airport Marriott Hotel will facilitate Rep. Aiken's attendance, since he will be flying in. Also, proximity to the Metrolink will provide a way for participants at the student conference at St. Louis University to travel to the meeting.

Note: Since the council meeting, arrangements for the April section meeting have changed. The meeting will now be held at St. Louis University. Boeing External Affairs is helping with the arrangements.

Attendance – Andrew Cary

Five ASM members attended the February section meeting, though 10 were promised. ASM will reimburse us for the shortfall. Total attendance at the event was 28.

Career Enhancement – Steve D’Urso

Our first career enhancement panel discussion will be during the technical paper competition at the student conference. The panelists include Ralph Pelikan, Rich Niksch, Steve Huey?, Rhonda Tyler, Jim Mace, and Jim Hendrix. The program will be held over lunch. Most panelists will also be available for the May program.

Education – Marty Ferman

No report.

Historian – Fred Roos

No report.

Honors and Awards – Ray Cosner

Ray is ready to issue a call for nominations for awards and is lining up award materials. Traditionally, the Lindbergh Award winner is the featured speaker at the awards banquet. However, it is possible we would not have a winner in any given year. Possible candidates offered by council members include: 1) W1W implementation, 2) local Air Traffic Control actions during the 9-11 attacks, 3) American Airlines for the merger with TWA, and 4) Missouri Air National Guard.

Membership – Joe Stemler

The flyer for the last section meeting had an inadvertent mention of free memberships, something the council had not approved. However, there were no takers, so the issue is moot. Joe proposed we use our membership budget to reimburse new members for a dinner meeting.

Joe has received the 50-year membership pin for William Briggs. However, there was no accompanying certificate. National will be contacted for a certificate. As an alternate, we could compose our own certificate. Rudy Yurkovich has official award paper and seals. Karen Copper offered to compose a certificate, if necessary.

Newsletter – Dave Morgan

Dave solicited for more commentary pieces for the newsletter. Bob Dowgwillo has a commentary from Andy Anderson to pass on.

Pilot Education – Jeff  Larrick

No report.

Pre-College Outreach - Karen Copper

Flyers for Trivia Night and the Paper Airplane Contest have been distributed by email. Karen noted winners of the St. Louis Science Fair are usually invited to the  May Honors & Awards banquet. In the past, we have also included the middle school "honorable mentions." The meeting should be on a weekend to accommodate the students. We should consider an event at the Creve Coeur Airport.

NEW BUSINESS

·        Additional Joint Meetings

Rudy Yurkovich noted that the ASM was very happy to see the good attendance at our joint February dinner meeting. They would support future joint meetings. Rudy recommends we look into increasing our use of the joint-sponsorship formula. However, this will require the establishment of protocols etc. Walt Reschke will draft a "contract" spelling out the protocol for these events.

·        AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Conference

Rudy Yurkovich provided some details about the Applied Aero Conference to be held in St. Louis in June. Jackie Jackson, chief Boeing test pilot, will be a speaker at the awards banquet. Bob Krieger will purchase a block of registrations for the engineering department heads to distribute.

·        Reception for New Associate Technical Fellows

Rudy Yurkovich announced that the reception will be held on March 19.  Boeing pays for the technical society membership for ATM's. He will inform the new ATM's of this benefit. Also, he will encourage Boeing Senior Technical Fellows to apply for AIAA Technical Fellow rank.

·        Next Council Meeting

Peggy polled the council members present to see if it would be necessary to reschedule the council meeting now scheduled for Easter Monday. The next council meeting will be held at its usual data and time.

·       Next Meeting is 1 April 2002

The meeting was adjourned by consensus of the council present.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Dowgwillo

St. Louis Section Secretary
