Council Meeting Minutes

10 September 2001


 

Peggy Holly convened the meeting at 5:05 PM in the Building 100, Conference Room 2 East.

 

Attendees: Peggy Holly, Bob Dowgwillo, John Mohr, Rudy Yurkovich, Steve D’Urso, Joe Stemler, Dave Morgan, Bill LaManna, Dick Pinckert, Ron Smith. The required 12 members (50%) of the Council for a quorum were not present.

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

·        Minutes from last meeting – Minutes were reviewed but could not be accepted due to lack of a quorum.

 

·        Treasurer’s Report – All the Category III funding requested from AIAA has been received.

 

·        Region V Representative – Rudy Yurkovich for Larry Brase. AIAA requests a report on the Liberty Bell 7 event, including accounting data and a description of the event. We will also use the information for a newsletter article.

 

The ongoing AIAA “Evolution of Flight” program was discussed. The RAC V chairperson is not aware of the St. Louis section contact, Karen Copper. The Rocky Mountain section has had an essay contest connected with this program.  With 75th anniversary of Lindbergh flight coming up, the St. Louis section may be able to do similar project with special prizes.

 

RAC V chair is also not aware of St. Louis section history contact, Fred Roos.

 

The six-month waiting period between becoming an Educator Associate member and eligibility for the $200 grant has been waived.

 

Nominations are open for special service citations.

 

There are still $380 in Category III funds available. Category I funds will come directly to the sections this year, not passing through Regional.

 

Region V needs to fill the positions of DD Public Policy and DD Career Enhancement.

 

A budget for the student paper competition must be prepared prior to the Reno meeting on 14 January 2002.

Career Enhancement – Steve D’Urso

Continuing to study the programs provided by AIAA National for career enhancement. However, much of the material concerns finding a new job, as opposed to growing in your current job. Planning to have a Sectional activity in the 1st quarter of 2002. Considering a local short course to be offered during the AIAA Fluids Conference in June 2003. A proposed timeline for future activity will be prepared for the next meeting.

 

Education – Marty Ferman (no report)

 

Historian – Fred Roos (no report)

 

Honors and Awards – Ray Cosner (no report)

 

Membership – Joe Stemler

National is offering a “trial” membership program. Get AIAA membership free for 9 months. Sixteen memberships are available on a first come, first served basis. Applications must be received by 15 October. Contact Joe Stemler for the forms. Consider offering them to non-members purchasing tickets to next AIAA event. Boeing no longer sponsors free first year membership. An informal review of John Lockhard’s organization (MAMS Engineering) suggests only 13 of 56 managers are AIAA members.

Pilot Education – Jeff  Larrick (no report)

 

Programs – Bill LaManna

Considering SAE proposal for joint meeting on 15 January 02. Other sponsors would be ASQ and INCOSE. Speaker would be Mitchell Puliver, Director , Automotive Performance Films, Solutia. Subject of the talk: “Scenario Development and Its Role in Strategic Planning.” Program: 1-½ hours. Reception (snacks and drinks) in Prologue Room.

 

A list of potential topics was offered for comment:

 

1)      “Sonic Cruiser” with Walt Gillette or Alan Mulally

2)      “The Future of Air Force Research Labs” with Gen. Nielsen (AFRL Commander)

3)      “Congressional Aerospace Topics” with Hon. Tod Atkin

4)      “The Future of Aerospace Support” with Dave Spong

 

We should also consider scheduling a tour of the TWA flight simulator facility here before American Airlines moves the operation to Texas.

NEW BUSINESS

 

·        The group discussed Andrew Cary’s discovery that we can set a payroll deduction system for meeting payments.  There was concurrence that Andrew should move forward with this and present details at the next council meeting.

 

·        Nominations for Technical Committee memberships are open.  Rudy & Peggy will meet with John Lockard and Dave Spong to set strategy.

 

·        Next Meeting is 1 October.
