Education Mike Swartwout

HistorianFred Roos

IN response to a request from national, Fred is working to update our site nomination and provide additional information.

Honors & Awards – Walt Reshke

Walt showed the format used for previous award night programs. He suggested we adopt a similar format for the upcoming awards banquet.

Walt presented the list of the current section award nominees:

Section Service: Dr. Ray Nitzsche

Technical Contribution: Rudy Yurkovich, Mike Heller, Boeing Bird of Prey Team

Lindbergh: Darryl Davis

Technical Management: Marty Eigenmann

Civic: Dr. Ramesh Agarwal

In the ensuing discussion, the following points were made. Walt verified the section has given the Technical Contribution Award to a team before.  Fred suggested that the intent of the Lindbergh award does not match the supporting information for the nomination. Moving the nominee to the Technical Management Award was considered. Dave Riley recommended the council consider Mike Heller for a national-level award. He suggested Flight Mechanics would be most appropriate. Mike McCoy asked if there were any objections to give two Technical Contribution Awards this year. No objections were noted. Bob noted that actual accomplishments should be the prime criterion, rather than speculation on future, potential accomplishments.

To resolve the open questions, Bob moved that 1) Marty Eigenmann be the awardee for Technical Management, and 2) Rudy and Darryl be considered for awards next year. Walt 2nd. Council agreed.

Membership – Tim O'Brien

Nothing new to report.

Newsletter – Dave Morgan

The next newsletter is in work.

Pilot Education – Jeff Larrick

No report.

Pre-College Outreach - Karen Copper

March 12, 6 women from the St. Louis Section of AIAA participated at the “Expand Your Horizons in Math & Science” at St. Louis Community College.  This is a program for girls in grades 7 – 12. Karen gave a presentation on “Daring to Soar: Women in Aviation,” a historical highlight.  The other 5 women participated in career panel discussions, sharing their experiences in technical education and career choices and answering questions for the students.

Twenty-eight people attended the 4th Paper Airplane Contest on Saturday, 29 March, with Ken Blackburn.  In addition to the Time Aloft and Distance contests, Tim Garrett challenged Ken to a fly-off.  The kids were excited to see the “experts” fly their paper airplanes. The section provided lunch and great kite prizes.

The Trivia Night is coming up quickly, 26 April.  Karen needs to know what attendance prizes the council members have rounded up.  Tables ($80) and individual ($10) sales are needed!  Sign ups are low – need everyone’s help in advertising.

Programs – Walt Reschke

May: Young Eagles Day is on May 3. Twenty-two young people have signed up so far. Boeing will provide a test pilot. We are still negotiating for an AV-8B.

Public Policy – Larry Brase for Dick Pinckert (temporary)

On 7-8 April 2003 Larry Brase, Mark Holly, Leon McKenny, and Yoshi Nakai will attend Congressional Visits Day from the section.

1903 Wright Flyer Replica – Larry Brase

All 10 participating Technical Societies (AIAA, AIChE, ASME, IEEE, INCOSE, SAE, SFTE, SWE, WWW, and 99's) that co-sponsored the astronaut Dr. Sandra Magnus event were again contacted by e-mail to determine their interest in sharing the cost of bringing this exhibit to St. Louis:

$30,000 - transportation, set-up and dismantling the plane.

$ 9,582 - tent rental, set-up and dismantling (82' x 82' White clearspan

$39,582                                               Structure on 10' Uprights)

If 10 organizations were to co-sponsor the event, the cost would only be about $4,000.

This has generated lots of encouraging comments, but no society can afford the cost.

Linda Roche and T J Slattery of the St Charles Riverfest 4th of July festival were also contacted for display space rather than at the Casino Queen Fair St. Louis location.

Publicity (Internal) - Carrie Kniker

In Carrie's absence, Karen put together the current Young Eagles Day flyer. This flyer is on our website. Carrie will have a look at it and at least update it with a map to Smartt Field.

Service Projects – Tom Mroczkowski

Judges will be needed for Friday, April 11, with the awards presented on April 15. Carrie was asked to put a notice in the Boeing News Now.
